Inmate Locator by State

Official custody searches for every state and D.C., plus federal and immigration locators. Start here to find where someone is held, then contact the facility to confirm.

Jail or prison? Start in the right place

  • Just arrested or awaiting trial: usually a county or city jail. Search the county sheriff's roster or the statewide jail tool below.
  • Sentenced to more than a year: usually a state prison. Use the state prison locator.
  • Federal charges or sentence: try the Federal Bureau of Prisons. People awaiting federal trial are often in local jails under U.S. Marshals custody.
  • Immigration hold: use the ICE detainee locator.

Federal & national searches

  • Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator

Federal prison records from 1982 onward. Does not cover county jails or most people awaiting federal trial.

  • ICE Online Detainee Locator

Official search for people in immigration detention.

  • VINELink

Custody status and victim notification for participating agencies. Coverage varies by state and county; run by a contractor, not a government agency.

  • U.S. Marshals prisoner information

There is no public U.S. Marshals inmate search. For federal pretrial detainees, contact the Marshals district office or the holding facility.
